Durham, NC – A study by Duke University researchers has found high levels of leaked methane in well water collected near shale-gas drilling and hydrofracking sites. The scientists collected and analyzed water samples from 68 private groundwater wells across five counties in northeastern Pennsylvania and New York.

“At least some of the homeowners who claim that their wells were contaminated by shale-gas extraction appear to be right,” says Robert B. Jackson, Nicholas Professor of Global Environmental Change and director of Duke's Center on Global Change.

Vermont Senate Committee Passes Ban on Fracking

Earlier this morning the Senate Natural Resources and Energy Committee voted unanimously for a bill that would ban hydraulic fracturing for natural gas in Vermont.

Hydraulic fracturing, commonly known as “fracking,” is a dangerous drilling process that pumps huge quantities of water, toxic chemicals, and sand at very high pressure into shale formations to release natural gas from otherwise irretrievable depths. Fracking for natural gas has been linked to public health threats as well as serious ground, air, and water pollution. Activities related to fracking have also led to an increased rate of earthquakes.

The Environmental Protection Agency issued the first-ever national air pollution regulations for fracking on Wednesday. First proposed in July 2011, the final rules have been welcomed by environmental groups as a much-needed initial move in reducing pollution and protecting public health from the toxic chemicals involved in the oil and natural gas drilling process. But many cautioned it was just a first step.

March of 2012 marks a significant milestone in the grassroots momentum against hydraulic fracturing in New York State. Local officials in the Town of Rush, outside Rochester, placed the health, welfare and safety of their citizens ahead of the influence peddlers and voted unanimously to enact a moratorium. (This was accomplished despite the unsolicited “encouragement” of legal advisement from an Albany-based law firm to defer action and not consider moving forward with a moratorium.)

ULSTER COUNTY, N.Y. — No fracking for now. Members of the Olive town board reached that decision unanimously at a town board meeting Tuesday evening.

The board's decision places a moratorium on the exploration, extraction, disposal and storage of natural gas within town limits for a year.

The hydraulic fracturing or “fracking” of natural gas from underground rock has divided communities all across the state. Some favoring the economic opportunity it might present, while others opposing it for its potential harmful effects against the environment.

“In our view, you know, this has been going on for a long time, but we've only really been into in for the last six months. And you get reports from Pennsylvania and all over that don't sound so good. We would like to follow through on it and do it with more facts,” said Town of Olive Supervisor Berndt Leifeld.

The fracking industry has been causing earthquakes in Ohio. So it’s time we caused one of our own.

No, not a 4.0-on-the-Richter-scale temblor like the one that shook Youngstown on New Year’s Eve. Instead, we need to aim for an 8.0 on the political scale–we need to shake Columbus with the biggest anti-fracking gathering yet seen in the U.S.

Save these dates: June 14-17, in Columbus. The 14-16th will be dedicated to training and movement building, and on the 17th we’ll be taking over the Ohio statehouse for a people’s assembly that will ‘pass’ legislation that Ohioans need to stop this destructive practice. You can sign up here, but we need you to do more–please spread the word to friends and colleagues. And get ready for the caravan that will cross the state in mid-May to raise awareness – we’ll have much more on that front soon.
